Hand Papermaking Basics

Hand Papermaking Basics

Saturday, March 15, 9am-1pm

Class level: All levels welcome

Age requirements: 16 and older

Teaching artist: Hannah O’Hare Bennett (@hannahoharebennettstudio)

Class fee: $170

In this class you will learn the basics of Western style papermaking. We will start with an introduction to different types of papers and pulps, with many examples from past classes. The bulk of the time in class will be spent learning the technique of pulling sheets from a vat of pulp with a small mold and deckle, couching the sheets onto pelons or felts, and finally pressing the sheets to extract most of the water. The instructor will discuss different methods of drying the papers after they are pressed, but most of the papers will be dried in her studio, for students to pick up from TAC at a later date. The last half an hour of the class will be a thorough clean up session. Students will have access to two different kinds of pulp, and will produce approximately 20 sheets of 5x7" papers.

Note: No special skills are needed for this beginner's class, however, you must be comfortable standing for twenty minutes at a time, and will likely get at least somewhat wet.

Suggested Supplies:

  • Rubber/waterproof apron. TAC has water proof aprons to use if you don’t have one

  • Rubber/waterproof boots

All other materials will be supplied, but students may want something to take notes with.
