Make Your Own Sling Bag

Class level: Beginner (prior machine sewing skills are recommended)

Sling bags and fanny packs are everywhere! In this timely workshop you will learn how to make your own and walk out of class with a great new bag to wear around Madison all summer. You will be set to do all your Farmer’s Market shopping hands free in something you can proudly say that you made yourself!
The pattern we will be using is the Sallie Tomato Fifth Avenue bag. This belt bag can be secured with a side release buckle or more elevated bag hardware. The strap is also easily adjustable. This bag pattern is beginner-friendly.
Fabrics Recommended: Cottons, canvas, denim, non-wovens (such as cork, faux leather).
This is a beginner class; but prior machine sewing skills are recommended.
Students are responsible for purchasing the pattern and required materials listed below prior to the first class. Link to purchase pattern (required), materials and supplies.
Required Tools for Class:
Sewing machine (please bring zipper or narrow foot if you have one. If you would like to use a sewing machine from TAC’s studio, please email us)
Rotary cutter (available for use at TAC)
Scissors (available for use at TAC)
Straight pins (available for use at TAC)
Clips (available for use at TAC)
Double sided basting tape (optional)
Sewing needle - Universal 80/12. Recommend denim needle if using heavier fabrics. (provided if using a TAC sewing machine)
Polyester Thread
Fifth Avenue Bag Pattern (purchase before first class; Link to purchase)
Fabrics and Supplies Required for Class:
Main Fabric: ⅓ yard
Lining: ⅓ yard
Fusible Interfacing: ⅓ yard
Stabilizer: Sew In Fleece or Foam: If 28”, ⅓ yard. If 45”, ¼ yard.
Zippers: Size #5, 12” & 7” (Nylon #5 zippers recommended)
1 ½” Webbing: 1 ½ yards
1 ½” Buckle Closure (1) OR 1 ½” D-rings (2), swivel hooks (2) and slider buckle (1)

Cut out pattern templates and cut fabrics and interfacing according to pattern.
