Class level: Beginner with some hand sewing experience (must be able to do the whipstitch)

Age requirements: 18 and older

Teaching artist: Miryeong Hong (@onijogakbo)

Class fee: $95

Jogakbo is a Korean craft that involves stitching together pieces of fabric. In this Jogakbo workshop, participants will create a round pin cushion using traditional Korean fabric. Using a whipstitch, we will sew together 15 pieces of silk fabric to create the round cushion. Then, we will make a "Bak-ji" knot to decorate the center, forming it into the shape of a flower bud. Bak-ji is called a "bat" in English. In Korean culture, bats symbolize abundance and luck, making the Bak-ji a popular element in traditional crafts and fashion.

This object can be used as a pin cushion, which is its original purpose, but it can also be made into a keychain, Norigae (an accessory for Hanbok), or a Christmas tree ornament. Once the round cushion is complete, I will show participants how to adapt it for different uses.

The class will begin with a slide presentation that includes videos and pictures demonstrating the process. Afterward, I will work individually with each participant to teach the Bak-ji knot. Participants will also be given an instruction sheet for reference. If you are new to hand stitching, I will guide you on how to start stitching and tie off the end.

All material and tools will be provided.
