Introduction to Punch Needle

Saturday, October 19, 1:00-4:00pm

Class Level: Beginner

Age Requirements: 18 and older

Teaching Artist: Maday Delgado (@sustainabletextiledesign)

Class Fee: $150.00 (plus required kit to be purchased separately, see detail below)

Curious about punch needle embroidery? In this workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to know to get started with this fun technique of creating richly textured designs by looping yarn through fabric.

Punch needle is a beautiful embroidery technique that originated in North American and has been around since the 1800s.

Maday has been leading punch needle workshops around the country—in-person and online—since 2019. The Oxford needle, invented by Amy Oxford, is Maday's favorite tool to use and teach with; an Oxford needle is included in the required kit.

As a slow-making technique, punch needle is perfect for our modern life; it creates a connection to generations before us and a chance to innovate for ourselves. It is portable, colorful, and rewarding. The loops created by yarn are surprisingly durable.

Each participant will create their own unique design; no previous drawing or stitching experience is needed.

Required Supplies (for students to bring):

  • Bulky yarn in 3-4 colors. Maday likes Manos del Uruguay Cardo wool. (Maday will also have a variety of yarn colors available for purchase the day of the workshop.)

  • Sharpie marker, fine point

  • Small scissors or thread snips

Required Supplies (to purchase):

  • 10" non-slip embroidery hoop

  • Monks cloth serged and ready to go

  • Oxford rug punch needle
